"Elephants roam fast fashion"
Starting with elephants, there are now tigers, monkeys, fighting cocks and a whole array of animal dominating fast fashion at electric speed.

That is if you are travelling in Asia, especially Thailand where elephant pants have become so popular among tourists. At a cost of under US$3, the airy breathable light weight pant is comfortable and help make the hot and humid weather bearable.

Elephant pants appear to have surfaced 2,000 years ago in Persia. The insignia somehow made its incarnation to the Bohemian era; and then Southeast Asia, and travelling backpackers at the start of this millennium, according to many accounts.

Right outside Thai temples seem unlikely places for marketing outlets that popularize the pants. They are offered to westerners who wish to visit the temples but were wearing short trousers – deemed as unpolite and unworthy to go into places of worship.

Some people may counter that elephant pant designs are anything but a fashion. Many people who wear them do so for on grounds of conservation and philanthropy as they are popular a clothing item at many charitable elephant conservatories in Northern Thailand.

Regardless, its phenomenon has moved to a new plateau. Many Thai provinces have launched or in the process of launching each of their own “animal” pants of the same fabric to catch in on the frenzy.

It’s shellfish design for beach resort Hua Hin, ancient fish for the cultural city of Sukhothai, monkey for Lopburi, silver-blue cat for Nakhon Ratchasima, fighting cock for Phisanulok, dinosaur for Khon Kaen, and tiger for Phrae. Uttradit province has gone further with durian fruit designed pants.

Local fashion scenes are hoping to go global following the elephant pants with their own uniqueness.
