We often wonder why some individuals consistently choose the challenging paths when an easier route is available.
A compelling symbolic answer to this question can be found in the story of the Great Dusky Swift and the Devil’s Throat, or Garganta del Diablo, in South America. On one side are these tiny birds, and on the other is the powerful and majestic waterfall of the Iguazu Falls system, located in Argentina’s Iguazu National Park. This waterfall features a U-shaped chasm approximately 492 feet (150 meters) wide and 269 feet (82 meters)high, where a massive volume of water plunges into a narrow abyss, creating a dramatic spectacle of mist and sound.
For centuries, the Great Dusky Swift has made its home behind this waterfall. These lightweight birds have mastered the art of navigating through the massive curtains of water, darting into the hidden caves behind the falls, which serve as their sanctuary. They fly through the formidable water curtains like daredevils attempting to set an Olympic record, and they do so eagerly every day.
Wild life biologists provide a clear explanation for this behavior. These brave birds choose to build their nest behind the waterfalls to protect themselves from dangers lurking in the rainforest outside. They feel safer in their dark, misty, and steep-walled refuge.
Life often demands not only bravery from us but also shrewd judgment. The Great Dusky Swift opts for the darken, cool walls behind the waterfalls rather than the vast, diverse, and lively tropical forest outside to establish their lives and families. They are willing to face what many would consider unthinkable dangers to reach their chosen home.
Metaphorically, a safer place for us is often one where the environment fosters calmness and stillness. Only those brave enough to navigate through life’s intimidating challenges can truly understand why this is so.
