A good friend of Dezpyte once told us about an intriguing and profound expression his father once used: “At my age, I no longer buy green bananas”. Of course we all can easily guess what his father had implied. But do we actually get it? Can we actually readily live our life that way... all the time? Introspect. Most people may consider it a funny expression… but is it really?
Most people, if one lives long enough, can probably identify certain moments we sadly regret when we could have done more, given more, forgiven more our loved ones, if we would have known that they would part from us sooner than we’d have imagined. Why do we make these kind of mistakes? Because we keep buying green bananas.
And there are things we keep putting off to do... we keep telling ourselves it’s not the right time yet, there is plenty of time... We keep buying green bananas!
Humans, equipped with fertile, vivid imaginations, can look at a green banana and project it as a ripe, yummy yellow fruit ready to be eaten many days into the future. This ability does give our species advantages in managing and planning life. But it sometimes can also handicap us from living in the present. Isn’t this so?
Projecting too much into the future, we may live in dreams that may never materialize...
